Anxiety disorders are some of the most common mental health conditions, but make no mistake–without treatment, the symptoms can be debilitating. Anxiety has the potential to impact all aspects of your life, including work, school, interpersonal relationships, and your physical well-being. Without treatment, anxiety disorders have the potential to worsen over time. However, with treatment, symptoms of anxiety can improve, as can your quality of life, connections with other people, and functioning. Outpatient programs like ours expand access to anxiety treatment for those who need to fulfill obligations like work responsibilities while getting the help they need. Additionally, the programs at Louisville Recovery Center are covered by most forms of insurance, including private health insurance and Medicaid insurance plans.

Outpatient Programs for Anxiety Treatment at Louisville Recovery Center

We offer day and evening outpatient treatment program options for adults with anxiety disorders. Here are the two main types of outpatient programs for anxiety treatment at Louisville Recovery Center.

Kentucky Mental Health Care

Our Kentucky mental health care program is ideal for individuals living with anxiety disorders and other mental health concerns without co-occurring substance abuse. Every client in our mental health treatment programs will work with the Louisville Recovery Center team to design a personalized treatment plan, which will entail groups, family therapy, and individual therapy sessions. The mental health treatment programs for adults at Louisville Recovery Center operate on an outpatient basis. This means that you can get therapy during the day at our center but sleep at home rather than living on-site at an inpatient mental health center during your program.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Having an anxiety disorder can raise your risk of substance abuse. In addition to standalone mental health care, we provide dual-diagnosis treatment in Kentucky for clients facing both substance use disorders and mental health conditions like anxiety. When mental health disorders and substance abuse coexist, an individual must be able to get treatment for both. Dual-diagnosis treatment is linked to positive treatment outcomes such as improvements in psychiatric functioning, decreased hospitalization, and a better quality of life.

The approach to treatment is largely the same as it is in our mental health-only programs; however, therapies and treatments are expanded to address substance abuse, too.

Therapies Used to Treat Anxiety at Louisville Recovery Center

We use a combination of evidence-based and complementary therapies for mental health and substance abuse. This includes the most evidence-based treatments for anxiety. Therapies used to treat anxiety at Louisville Recovery Center include but aren’t limited to the following.

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT)
  • Breathwork therapy
  • Equine therapy
  • Music therapy

Therapies like CBT have been proven effective for the treatment of anxiety disorders. We also offer meditation groups and a range of other treatments.

Signs and Symptoms of Anxiety

Learning more about anxiety can help you identify it in yourself or someone you know. The signs and symptoms of anxiety a person may experience depend on what type of anxiety disorder they have. Common anxiety disorders and their symptoms include:

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by excessive worry and fear surrounding everyday things. For example, work, household tasks, school, errands, and hobbies. In addition to the persistent, excessive anxiety someone with GAD feels, they may experience symptoms like fatigue, irritability, difficulty falling or staying asleep, gastrointestinal distress, headaches, heart palpitations, trouble concentrating, and muscle tension.

Social Anxiety Disorder

Social anxiety disorder is characterized by anxiety symptoms that relate to everyday social situations. It is more than shyness and is not the same as being shy. Someone with social anxiety disorder may experience:

  • Disproportionate worry related to situations where they may be judged negatively.
  • Avoidance of certain (or many) social situations.
  • Fear that others will notice their anxiety.
  • Fear of embarrassment or humiliation.
  • Difficulty interacting with strangers.

In relation to social situations, someone with social anxiety may also experience racing thoughts, rumination, trouble sleeping, muscle tension, gastrointestinal distress, negative thoughts, and other symptoms.

Panic Disorder

Panic disorder is an anxiety disorder marked by repeated or recurrent panic attacks. A panic attack refers to an episode of intense fear or distress that peaks within minutes. During a panic attack, someone may experience symptoms such as:

  • Heart palpitations.
  • Trouble thinking clearly.
  • Impending feelings of doom.
  • Feeling like you are going to die.
  • Smothering feelings or shortness of breath.
  • Nausea or gastrointestinal distress.
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness.
  • Chest pain and discomfort.
  • Trembling or shaking.
  • Chills or hot flushes.
  • Derealization.

Additionally, a person with panic disorder will experience changes in behavior linked to the attacks or fear of future panic attacks (or the consequences of future panic attacks).

Specific Phobia

Specific phobia is a type of anxiety disorder marked by a serious, disproportionate, and irrational fear of an object, situation, activity, or concept that poses little to no real danger. With specific phobia, the fear you feel will be severe and will not dissipate easily. This disorder causes significant distress and impairment, and it typically involves avoidance of the thing that the person has a phobia of.

Agoraphobia

Agoraphobia is a disorder characterized by excessive, disproportionate fear related to situations where someone may feel helpless, unable to escape, or humiliated. Someone with agoraphobia will experience anxiety related to two or more of the following circumstances.

  • Being in enclosed spaces, like stores, theaters, or venues.
  • Being in open spaces.
  • Standing in line or being in a crowd.
  • Use of public transportation.
  • Being outside the home alone.

Situations like these will provoke anxiety in the individual for six months or more. Like with other anxiety disorders, the severity of agoraphobia can vary.

What Causes Anxiety?

You might wonder what causes anxiety. Although there is no singular cause, some things can increase the likelihood that you’ll develop an anxiety disorder. Risk factors linked to anxiety disorders include:

  • Having another physical or mental health condition.
  • A family history of anxiety disorders.
  • Adverse or traumatic events.

Our providers acknowledge the factors that contribute to your anxiety–like trauma–as part of our comprehensive approach to mental health care.
